Intergenerational Art Making During a Pandemic?
“It sure is a whole lot more challenging facilitating intergenerational projects during a pandemic, but there has never been a time when it was needed more than now. The Covid 19 pandemic has been horribly isolating for people living in long term care and for families who are geographically separated from other generations within their family unit. The good news is, it CAN be done and it’s well worth every bit of effort as my latest intergenerational arts project, “Creating Across Generations” shows!” Shelley King
Creating Across Generations
Residents from Fairhaven Long Term Home in Peterborough, Ontario have been busy creating 36 original stories for the project. We’ve been using a storytelling process developed by TimeSlips and it has been so much fun! Phase 2 of the project began in February 2022 when those stories went to 50 Grade 3 & 4 students at Edmison Heights Public School in Peterborough. Each student or pair of students were responsible for collaging an 18” X 12” art board of a setting for one of the stories created by the elders at Fairhaven. In Phase 3 from March to June 2022, 18 groups of grade 5 & 6 students made a desk-top puppet stage, built a small rod puppet of each character in the story, inserted the collaged art board into the back of the stage as the setting, and then brought the story to life through a puppet performance! The project doesn’t end there! From July 1st to 24th 2022, all puppet stages, collaged art boards, puppets, and stories will be on display at the Ludmila Gallery in downtown Peterborough. Friends, families and community members will have the opportunity to come to the month long exhibition to learn about the project and check out the magic that happens when you co-create between generations.
